Teff interesting facts.

Eragrostis tef or teff, also known as Williams lovegrass is an annual grass, a species of lovegrass native to Ethiopia but successfully cultivated in South Africa. The word "teff" is based on a word which means "lost" (because of the small size of the grain).
Eragrostis tef has an attractive nutrition profile, being high in dietary fiber and iron and providing protein and calcium. It is similar to millet and quinoa in cooking, but the seed is much smaller and cooks faster, thus using less fuel.
In 1996, the USNRC characterized
teff as having the "potential to improve nutrition, boost food
security, foster rural development and support sustainable landcare."
Teff
has been widely cultivated and used in South Africa and neighborhood
countries. Teff accounts for about a quarter of total cereal production
in South Africa.
Nutritional value:
Teff is gluten-free (and therefore can be consumed by celiacs) and has a high concentration of different nutrients, a very high calcium content, and significant levels of the minerals
phosphorus, magnesium, aluminum, iron, copper, zinc, boron and barium, and also of thiamin. Teff is high in protein. It is considered to have an excellent amino acid composition, including all 8 essential amino acids for humans, and is higher in lysine than wheat or barley.
Teff is high in carbohydrates and fiber.
In one 2003–2004 study in Ethiopia, farmers indicated a preference
among consumers for white teff over darker colored varieties. Teff
is gaining popularity in the western United States as an alternative
forage crop, in rotation with a légume such as alfalfa, because it uses C4 photosynthesis, similar to that of corn.
It is noted for its high quality and high yield, when compared to other forage rotations. It
is also known as an "emergency crop" because it is planted late in the
spring when the growing season is warmer, and most other crops have
already been planted. It does not tolerate any type of frost.
Teff is also valued for its fine straw, which is traditionally mixed with mud for building purposes.
The first draft of the Eragrostis tef genome was published in 2014.

Interesting facts about Alfalfa hay to buy
Another name for Alfalfa is Lucerne. It has grown importance in the farming community as one of the leading animal feed crops on earth.Alfalfa hay tends to grow in warm climates.
Alfalfa has a life span of between four and a half to 7 and a half years, but it has been proven this rugged animal food source can live more than 10 years, surviving dry spells due to its enormous underground root system going down more than 10 meters.
Alfalfa grows again after being foraged or cut. In South Africa a typical season can give up to 8 cuts in a season.
Alfalfa is best known as cattle feed. Of all the well known other types of hay, alfalfa has the best nutritional value. Because it has the best yield-ratio in terms of size of land used compared to the amount of harvest obtained from the land, Alfalfa remains one of the most profitable crops to grow when considering all aspects of farming.
Because of alfalfa hay's high nutritional value it is mainly it is used for dairy production but also for beef production.
Alfalfa in the field can cause animals to bloat if they eat it for grazing, so its best to first harvest the alfalfa, and let it dry before putting it out as animal feed.
Typical harvests of alfalfa hay in South Africa is about 80 bales of 23 kilograms each per hectare, or about 2 ton per hectare when cutting 9 times per year.
When Alfalfa is ready for harvest, it is cut and baled.
Alfalfa hay is content rich in protein, calcium, vitamin B, C, D, E and K.
Alfalfa can also be used as medicine, although a doctor should be consulted before any such medication can be used.
